What Changed

On September 3, 2026, updated EU safety thresholds took effect for baby and toddler foods, including 3-MCPD reduced to 500 µg/kg for infant products (from 750) and glycidyl fatty acid esters capped at 250 µg/kg (from 500), plus new furan/methylfuran limits of 30–80 µg/kg. On September 8, the Commission also published a draft amendment to Regulation (EC) No 2073/2005 setting a maximum cereulide limit of 1 µg/kg in dried infant and follow-on formula, with feedback open through September 29, 2026. A rectification to Implementing Regulation (EU) 2020/484 on Lacto-N-tetraose specifications was also issued the same day.

Recommended Actions 2

Verify EU supply of infant formula and baby foods against the new 3-MCPD, glycidyl ester, and furan limits (effective Sep 3, 2026)

Suppliers whose products were compliant under the previous thresholds may fail the tighter limits, creating recall or substitution risk.

Monitor feedback and finalization of the proposed 1 µg/kg cereulide limit before the September 29, 2026 consultation close

Coming on the heels of early-2026 recalls across 99 countries, this could force additional testing or reformulation requirements for dried formula suppliers.
