According to Claight market monitoring, Middle East geopolitical conflicts caused large-scale shutdowns of gas-based methanol plants in Iran, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, severely cutting import volumes to China.
CCFGroup reported in June that China's cumulative methanol exports surged 323% year-on-year to 526,700 metric tons from January to May, driven by overseas procurement demand. Port inventories fell to 514,000 tons by June 18, a 28% year-on-year decrease, as exports rose and imports contracted. The same source noted that the average operating rate of coastal MTO plants relying on merchant feedstock dropped to 30% by mid-June, with high raw material costs squeezing margins.
Mysteel reported that methanol prices moved higher during August 14 to 20 due to renewed geopolitical shipping disruptions and tighter domestic supply.
