According to Shanghai Metals Market, coal prices surged in early September, driving a temporary rise in magnesium prices before fundamentals weakened.
Shanghai Metals Market reports that national primary magnesium output in September was approximately 95,300 mt, a 0.96% decrease month-on-month. Weekly output rose 4.11% from September 18 to September 24 as smelters resumed production after maintenance. China's magnesium product exports declined in August 2026, falling 3.5% month-on-month and 13.7% year-on-year.
Shanghai Metals Market also reports that the social inventory of magnesium ingots increased by 1.55% month-on-month as of the week ending September 28.
