- Sustainability is now central to aluminium economics. Recycling is the largest lever: substituting primary metal with secondary aluminium can cut embodied carbon by about 96 percent and energy use by more than 90 percent, and over 75 percent of all aluminium ever produced remains in use today. Regional primary footprints vary by an order of magnitude - hydro-powered Canadian or Norwegian metal sits at the low end, coal-powered capacity at the high end - and the spread is increasingly monetised through low-carbon premiums and certification. The sector targets net zero by 2050, with published science-based decarbonisation pathways; the industry currently emits more than 1.1 gigatonnes of CO₂-equivalent annually. Buyers with scope-3 commitments are specifying certified low-carbon or high-recycled-content metal, rewarding producers that invested in clean power and closed-loop recycling. Confidence is high.
